The Bay of Kotor

Montenegro's Most Dramatic Landscape

Massive medieval city walls of Kotor reflected in still green moat water with karst mountains behind

Kotor Old Town

A Walled City Frozen in Time

About This Activity

A private full-day journey from Dubrovnik into the UNESCO-protected Bay of Kotor — Herceg Novi, the baroque town of Perast, a private boat to the island church of Our Lady of the Rocks, and the walled city of Kotor.

Montenegro Private Excursion: Bay of Kotor & Our Lady of the Rocks

The Bay of Kotor is one of the most dramatic landscapes on the Adriatic — a deep fjord-like gulf cut between limestone mountains and the sea, lined with medieval fortresses, Baroque palaces, and stone villages that have barely changed in five centuries. This private full-day excursion from Dubrovnik takes you into the heart of that world, at a pace that allows you to actually absorb it.

Your journey begins with chauffeur-driven luxury transport from Dubrovnik in a premium vehicle. The coastal road towards Montenegro is itself a scenic introduction — cliffs above the sea, the border crossing into a different country, and then the first views of Herceg Novi, the fortress town perched above the bay entrance. Its layered history of Venetian, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian rule is visible in the stone streets and towers that climb from the waterfront.

From there, the route follows the inner bay to Perast — perhaps the most quietly beautiful town on this coast. A compact Baroque settlement with no cars, church towers, and palaces built on the wealth of 17th and 18th-century maritime trade. From Perast's waterfront, you board a private boat to the island of Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela), an artificial island built stone by stone by sailors over centuries, each returning from a safe voyage with a rock dropped into the bay. The church they built holds centuries of votive offerings — paintings, silver plaques, and model ships left by sailors in gratitude.

The final stop is Kotor, a UNESCO-listed walled city at the innermost point of the bay. The medieval old town is one of the best-preserved in the Adriatic — a maze of squares, churches, palaces, and cats that have become the city's unofficial symbol. Your guide brings the layers of Venetian rule, the Republic of Ragusa's influence, and the dramatic city walls climbing the mountain behind into sharp focus.

Why this route works as a full day

The Bay of Kotor demands slow travel. The distance between Dubrovnik and Kotor is modest on a map, but the villages, the boat to the island, and the walled city deserve proper time. Combining this with Budva or Sveti Stefan turns a meaningful journey into a rushed transit. This route is deliberately complete without overreach.

What's included

  • Private chauffeur-driven transport from your Dubrovnik accommodation
  • Private boat to Our Lady of the Rocks (Perast)
  • Dedicated English-speaking guide throughout Montenegro
  • Flexible pacing — the route adapts to your group

Best for

Guests who want to understand the Bay of Kotor rather than simply photograph it — history, maritime culture, and one of the Adriatic's most moving island churches, in a single unhurried day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "private excursion" mean — is it just our group?

Yes. A private excursion is run exclusively for you and your party — whether that is two people or a group of twelve. You will not be sharing your vehicle, guide, or schedule with anyone else. Departure times, pace, and stops are set entirely around you.

What is included in the price?

All private land excursions include: a dedicated English-speaking guide, a private air-conditioned vehicle, all transfers from and back to your accommodation, and any entry fees, park passes, or boat crossings required for the specific destination. Lunch, personal spending, and optional activities are not included unless specified on the excursion page.

How long is a typical day excursion?

Most of our private day excursions run around 8 hours door-to-door. Longer destinations that involve significant driving time from Dubrovnik — such as Plitvice Lakes, Krka National Park, and Sarajevo — are full-day commitments of 11–13 hours. Exact durations are indicated on each excursion page.

Can we customize the route or choose what we visit?

Yes — private means flexible. When you make your inquiry, tell us your interests, pace preferences, and any specific stops you would like to include or skip. Our guide will plan the day accordingly. We do our best to accommodate special requests: longer lunch breaks, extra time at a particular site, or combining two nearby destinations into one day.

Do you run excursions year-round, including shoulder season?

Yes. Unlike boat tours, our land excursions operate in every season. The Plitvice Lakes are spectacular in autumn and winter. Pelješac wine country is most pleasant in harvest season (September–October). Some sites — such as the Kravice Waterfalls — are best visited outside the peak summer heat. We will always advise on the best time for your chosen destination if you are undecided.

What is your cancellation and bad weather policy for land excursions?

Land excursions are not dependent on sea conditions and are operated in all weather except extreme circumstances (heavy snow on mountain roads, road closures). If we must cancel due to conditions outside our control, you will receive a full refund or the option to reschedule with no expiration date.

For client cancellations: full refund if cancelled more than 48 hours before departure. No refund for cancellations within 48 hours or no-shows.

Where do you pick us up, and do you offer port pickup for cruise guests?

We collect you directly from your hotel, villa, or apartment in Dubrovnik. For cruise ship guests, we offer pickup from the Dubrovnik port (Gruž or the Old Town pier) and will return you in time for embarkation — the latest return time can be agreed in advance. Please confirm your ship''s departure time when booking.

Do I need to book in advance? How do I confirm a reservation?

We recommend booking at least 48 hours in advance, and further ahead during peak season (June–September) when vehicle and guide availability fills quickly. To reserve your excursion, send us an inquiry with your preferred date, group size, and any special requests. We will confirm within a few hours and send payment instructions. No payment is required at the time of inquiry — we confirm availability first.
