Tailor-made trips and day tours to Montenegro

Montenegro is the most dramatic short hop from Croatia — Boka Bay, Europe's southernmost fjord-like inlet, lies just 90 minutes south of Dubrovnik by road or boat. Most of our travellers visit Montenegro as part of a Dubrovnik-based itinerary (a private day trip to Kotor, Perast and Sveti Stefan, or a boat day across Boka Bay), but we also plan multi-day stays inside Montenegro for travellers who want more time with Lovćen, Cetinje, Ostrog Monastery and Skadar Lake. We are a Croatia-based DMC and have been running Montenegro day trips and tailor-made crossings since 2006.

What is the best way to visit Montenegro from Dubrovnik?

There are three ways we plan a Montenegro trip out of Dubrovnik:

  • Private land-based day tour — chauffeured car or minivan via the Cavtat border crossing, with stops in Perast (Our Lady of the Rocks short boat), Kotor Old Town, Budva Old Town and Sveti Stefan; back to Dubrovnik the same evening. The most popular option.
  • Private boat day across Boka Bay — speedboat from Dubrovnik to Herceg Novi, then through the bay to the Blue Cave, Mamula Island, Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks, with a waterfront lunch stop; back by sea.
  • Multi-day stay inside Montenegro — usually 2–4 nights based in Kotor, Perast or near Sveti Stefan, with private transfers, Lovćen and Cetinje, Ostrog Monastery, and a Skadar Lake wine-and-boat day.

Border passport control is required in both directions. We pre-brief drivers and skippers on wait times and seasonal patterns.

When is the best time to go to Montenegro?

  • May, June and September are ideal — calm Boka Bay water, mild inland temperatures for Lovćen and Cetinje, and uncrowded Old Towns.
  • July and August are peak: Sveti Stefan and Kotor get very busy and the coastal road slows down. Early starts (07:00 departure from Dubrovnik) make a meaningful difference.
  • October is excellent for the inland highlights — harvest season at Skadar Lake and Virpazar, and the bay still warm enough for a swim stop.
  • November to April is quiet; Ostrog Monastery, Cetinje and a private Kotor walk work year-round, but several boat operators and seasonal restaurants close.

What does a private Boka Bay boat tour include?

Boka Bay tours depart from Dubrovnik (Gruž or Cavtat) and cross the maritime border at Herceg Novi. A typical full-day itinerary covers:

  • The Blue Cave on the Luštica peninsula for a sea swim in good weather
  • Mamula Island for a coastal pass-by and short land stop
  • Perast with a tender across to the man-made island of Our Lady of the Rocks
  • A waterfront lunch stop in Perast or Kotor Bay
  • Optional Old Town Kotor walk with a private licensed guide

Most boats are skippered speedboats for 6–10 guests; we can also arrange small crewed yachts for slower-paced full days. See our private boat tours for departures and the Dubrovnik destination page for combining Boka Bay with a wider Adriatic itinerary.

Where should I stay in Montenegro?

For travellers staying overnight, the best bases are:

  • Kotor Old Town — boutique stone-house hotels inside the UNESCO walls; walking access to the fortress climb.
  • Perast — small luxury hotels on the bay front, the most photogenic base and a 15-minute drive from Kotor.
  • Tivat (Porto Montenegro) — modern marina district with 5★ hotels, restaurants and easy private boat access.
  • Sveti Stefan / Pržno — beach side of the country, calmer pace, with the iconic Sveti Stefan island view.

For shorter trips, most guests stay in Dubrovnik and visit Montenegro as a day trip — easier logistics, no second hotel check-in, and the same daylight in the country.

How do tailor-made Montenegro trips compare to booking everything separately?

A tailor-made itinerary typically costs the same as the sum of its parts, sometimes less, because we hold direct contracts with cross-border drivers, Boka Bay skippers, local Kotor guides and hotel partners — there is no third-party markup. The difference is in coordination: border-paperwork pre-checks, weather contingency for the bay, restaurant reservations in Perast and Kotor, last-minute changes — all handled by one team in Dubrovnik. Most of our travellers add Montenegro to a wider Croatia trip and ask for the same planner.

How far in advance should I book?

For May–October day trips, 4–8 weeks of lead time is comfortable — the best private speedboats and the top-rated cross-border drivers book out by early spring for peak weeks. For multi-day stays inside Montenegro, three months is safer for Kotor and Perast boutique hotels. We do accept short-lead requests (under two weeks) but availability narrows fast in July and August.

How do I start planning?

Send us your dates, party size and whether you want a day trip from Dubrovnik or a multi-night Montenegro stay — we reply within one business day with a first proposal and live availability. There is no charge for the planning itself; you only pay for the components you choose to book.
