The Bay of Kotor — Adriatic's Hidden Fjord

Baroque palaces, an island church, and a UNESCO medieval city enclosed by Venetian walls

Montenegro

About This Experience

Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska) is unlike anywhere else on the Adriatic coast — a fjord-like inlet carved between steep limestone mountains and the sea, dotted with Renaissance churches, Venetian palazzos, and island sanctuaries. This half-day tour takes you to its two unmissable highlights.

Perast — Baroque Pearl of Boka Bay Perast is a tiny town of extraordinary elegance. At the height of its maritime power in the 17th–18th centuries, its sea captains built palace after palace along the waterfront, all in the Baroque Venetian style that still stands immaculate today. The town has no cars and only two unpaved streets — it exists on a different timescale. You'll walk the promenade, visit one of the 16 churches that once served its seafaring population, and step into history at every corner.

Our Lady of the Rock — The Island Church From Perast, a short boat ride takes you to one of the most photographed spots in Montenegro: the artificial island of Gospa od Škrpjela, topped by a 17th-century Catholic church. According to legend, sailors began building the island stone by stone after finding a miraculous icon here in 1452. Inside, 68 oil paintings and a silk tapestry embroidered with the hair of local women cover the walls. The boat crossing takes just a few minutes and is included.

Kotor — The Fortified City The tour continues to Kotor, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the Adriatic. Enclosed within 4.5 km of Venetian walls that climb straight up the cliff face, Kotor's old town is a labyrinth of squares, Romanesque churches, and stone-paved alleys. You'll visit the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, built in 1166, and walk the main piazzas before climbing partway up the fortress walls for views over the bay. Kotor has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
